Notre Dame, Purdue near deal to play in Indianapolis

– Notre Dame and Purdue are close to taking the programs’ in-state rivalry to Lucas Oil Stadium next season.

The move could make the annual matchup the Irish’s “Shamrock Series” game – a home game that is played off campus – next season and help Notre Dame sort out its 2014 schedule.

“Close but not yet done,” a Notre Dame spokesman said in an email Friday of the possible deal.

Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke said nearly the same thing earlier in the day when he was talking with

“We’re working on (it),” Burke told the site. “I think we’re close.”

If the deal is reached, Notre Dame could be a step closer to being able to release its schedule for next season. The Irish have 13 contracted games for a 12-game schedule.

Moving Notre Dame’s home game against Purdue to the Colts’ stadium would fit the profile the university has sought for its off-site home matchups.

The Irish aim to play an opponent that has a vested interest in the site.

Notre Dame has played the game in NFL stadiums in each of the last three years – vs. Arizona State in the Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium this year; vs. Miami in Chicago’s Soldier Field last year; and vs. Maryland in the Redskins’ FedEx Field in 2011.

Before that, Notre Dame played Army in Yankee Stadium in 2010 and the first “Shamrock Series” game was played in San Antonio’s Alamo Dome in 2009.
