Notre Dame's Cam Biedscheid will redshirt this season

Notre Dame sophomore forward Cam Biedscheid will not play this season to preserve a year of eligibility.

The Irish maded the announcement on the program's Twitter account Friday, writing "@CamBiedscheid will preserve a year of eligibility by not playing in 2013-14. He and @NDMikeBrey (coach Mike Brey) will address media after game."

The No. 21 Irish tip off the season at 7 tonight at home against Miami (Ohio).

Biedscheid played in 34 games last season, averaging 6.2 points and 1.4 rebounds in 17.4 minutes per game.

The 6-foot-7, 185-pounder didn't play in Notre Dame's exhibition games as he and Brey discussed his options.

"If he wants to do it, we are supportive of it," Brey said Wednesday of Biedscheid. "I think for a kid, I've seen it with every one of them, coming to grips that you are not going to play this year, and that's a long year. I remember all of them, I remember (Tim Abromaitis, who also sat out as a sophomore after playing as a freshman at Notre Dame) sitting in my office and saying, 'Wow, I'm not going to put the jersey on for a year.' Yeah, that is not going to be easy at times.

"I think him knowing that part as opposed to what's best for him overall physically, academically, all across the board getting older. We have not spent a lot of time with it. He is practicing with us every day. It's almost as if, let me know how you feel, and we will move forward with whatever."
