FORT WAYNE – 2012-13 records: No. 21 Notre Dame (25-10), Miami (Ohio) (9-22)
When: 7 p.m. today
Where: Purcell Pavilion, South Bend
Notre Dame leaders: Jerian Grant (13.3 ppg), Pat Connaughton (4.7 rpg), Grant, Eric Atkins (5.5 apg)
Miami leaders: Will Felder (11.6 ppg), Felder (5.3 rpg), Quinton Rollins (3.9 apg)
Key matchup: Irish point guards Atkins, a senior, and Demetrius Jackson, a freshman, will have to be able to with stand the RedHawks’ trapping defense that produced 258 steals and forced opponents into 469 turnovers last season. Rollins led Miami in steals with 58, and six other RedHawks had 25 or more steals last season. Atkins was very good with the ball last season, committing only 74 turnovers in 35 games, and coach Mike Brey said Jackson has proved to be effective getting out of traps during preseason practices.
The skinny: Tonight’s game is the season opener for both teams. The series is tied 4-4 with Miami winning four of the last five games, including the most recent meeting on Dec. 8, 2001. The Irish haven’t defeated the RedHawks at home since a 68-36 win Dec. 9, 1944. Notre Dame forward Zach Auguste, who missed both exhibition games with a broken hand, is expected to play tonight. Irish sophomore forward Cam Biedscheid didn’t play in either exhibition game and is contemplating taking a redshirt year to preserve a season of eligibility. Former New Haven standout V.J. Beachem is a freshman at Notre Dame.
