Bulldogs grab 4A sectional title

New Haven defeated visiting Norwell 37-7 in a Class 4A game Friday to add the program’s sixth sectional title.

New Haven (11-1) advanced to play at Bishop Dwenger (9-3) in a regional game next Friday.

Norwell’s Reid Jutte returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a 7-0 lead 13 seconds into the game. But that was all New Haven would give Norwell the rest of the night.

Ariest Vasquez ran for 267 yards and scored two touchdowns, the first on a 3-yard run to tie the game with 7:58 to play in the opening quarter and the second on a 12-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 14-7 lead with 1:20 to play the first half.

Jordan Hogue, who finished with seven catches for 129 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt for a TD. D’Andre Smith scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs also got a safety with 2:06 to play.

Class 6A

CARMEL 38, CARROLL 7: Now it’s decision time for Drue Tranquill.

The Chargers’ senior said he would make a college decision between Purdue and Notre Dame after Carroll’s season ended. Well, it did. With a thud.

Carmel (9-3) held Tranquill to 7 rushing yards and 54 receiving yards and his brother Justin to 41 and 43 and Carroll to 236 total yards to win the regional title.

The Chargers (9-3) punted seven times and threw three interceptions on 10 of their first 11 possessions.

Class 2A

BREMEN 20, WOODLAN 13: Ryan Zellmer scored on a 5-yard run with 5:01 remaining in the fourth quarter to secure the sectional championship.

The Warriors (8-4) rallied from a 13-3 deficit to tie the game at 13 in the third quarter on a 78-yard touchdown run by Jaylin Bennett and a 42-yard field goal. Bennett had 144 yards on 19 carries and the score.

Zellmer gave Bremen (9-3) a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a 3-yard run and increased it to 13-3 on a 1-yard run by Josh Fuchs midway through the second quarter.

Class A

SOUTH ADAMS 40, SOUTHWOOD 39: The Starfires came up with a blocked extra-point kick in overtime to win the sectional championship.

The Knights (8-4) scored first in overtime, but South Adams blocked the kick and trailed only 39-33. Derek Wanner scored on a 4-yard run and kicked the game-winning extra point.

South Adams also blocked an extra point to help keep the game tied at 33 heading into overtime.

Wanner passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more scores.
