Libya gunmen kill 2 traffic police officers

TRIPOLI, Libya – A Libyan security official says unknown assailants have gunned down two traffic policemen in the country’s second city of Benghazi.

The official said the gunmen in a car fired at the policemen Saturday evening, killing them instantly. He spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to release the information.

On Friday, a large number of Benghazi traffic police deployed as part of a new program to better manage the city’s chaotic traffic, which has increased since the 2011 uprising that toppled dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

The official said the motive for the killings was unknown. But assassinations of public figures and security officials are frequent in Libya. Many killings are blamed on militias, who the government struggles to control even though it still relies on many of them to impose order.
