In a tightly contested game, the IPFW men came up just short against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, falling by one point, 72-71, in the first of three games of the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina Islanders Tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The Mastodons (1-2) trailed by one point at halftime, and both teams scored 39 points in the second half. IPFW was led by Joe Edwards who scored 19 points, went 4 for 4 from the free throw line and grabbed seven rebounds.
SAINT XAVIER 84, SAINT FRANCIS 73: In Palos Heights, Ill., the Cougars had their three-game winning streak snapped as they fell to No.11 Saint Xavier. The Cougars (5-3) were led by Scott Kohne who had 31 and 8 rebounds. Josh Hogan had 18 points, and Kegan Comer scored nine points.
HOLY CROSS 88, GRACE 87: At Winona Lake, the No.16 Lancers (4-1) were stunned by a Holy Cross (3-3) 3-point buzzer-beater at the Terry Polston Hoops for Hope tournament. The Lancers Greg Miller recorded team highs in scoring and rebounding with 31 and 13.
ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 89, MANCHESTER 60: At Illinois Wesleyan, the Spartans fell in their season opener at the Beer Nuts Tipoff Tournament hosted by Illinois Wesleyan. Manchester was led by Brady Dolezal who scored nine points.
INDIANA 57, INDIANA STATE 54: At Terre Haute, the Hoosiers (3-0) improved their undefeated status, led by Larryn Brooks, who scored a team-high 16 points over the Sycamores (2-1).
PURDUE-CALUMET 76, GRACE 65: At Grace, Allison Kauffman recorded a double-double in the Lancers loss, with 12 points and 10 rebounds at the Lancers own Hoops for Hope tournament.
MANCHESTER 58, KALAMAZOO 52: At Manchester, Erynn Meiklejohn scored 16 points in the Spartans win over the visiting Hornets in both teams season openers at the Manchester University Bankers Classic.
HUNTINGTON 63, WILBERFORCE 52: At Huntington, Amelia Recker recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds in the Foresters (3-2) win over the visiting Bulldogs (0-7).
