Cougars win league title

The Saint Francis trophy case has another new resident.

The No. 6 Cougars (8-2, MSFA MEL 5-1) claimed their 11th Mid-States Football Association Mideast League title Saturday with a 41-24 win over Marian at Bishop John M. D'Arcy Stadium, outscoring the Knights 34-7 in the second half.

Backup quarterback David Yoder led the way for Saint Francis, throwing for 224 yards and four touchdowns in the second half. Jason Nicodemus ran for 102 yards on 11 carries, including a 58-yard touchdown on the second play of the game.

Marian, meanwhile, held the football for more than 20 minutes in the first half and led 17-7 at the break, but managed only Robert Gibson's 44-yard touchdown run thereafter.

Saint Francis intercepted quarterback Joey Hecklinski three times in the second half and limited Marian (6-5, 4-2) to 144 yards after halftime.
