Drue Tranquill wants to help Notre Dame where he can

Drue Tranquill will arrive at Notre Dame as a defensive athlete, and possibly a few pounds heavier.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Carroll linebacker announced that he had de-committed from Purdue and joined Notre Dame's 2014 recruiting class Tuesday.

He could play safety or linebacker at Notre Dame, which had originally pegged him to play inside linebacker in college.

"It's going to be where ever I can make the best impact early," Tranquill said of what position he could play for the Irish. "I think it is going to where ever I naturally build into. If my frame is 215 coming in, I will probably start back at safety. If I'm 220, 225, strong and I'm ready to move down to linebacker, I will probably start there."

Tranquill had 75 tackles with 16 for loss, four sacks and an interception this season. He also ran for 1,420 yards with 28 touchdowns and had 16 receptions for 348 yards with five touchdowns.

He said he will not modify his workouts to add weight to play linebacker or stay near where he is at now to play safety.

"I'm just going to continue with my natural progressions," Tranquill said. "Over the past two or three years, I've consistently put on 15 to 20 pounds each offseason. I would assume based on that I would probably be around 220, 225. I'm going to let my body naturally grow into it and not focus too much on my weight.

"I want to maintain that speed aspect, focus on my change of direction and different things like that. Size is becoming less important in the game with more speed with the spread offenses. I'm going to continue to focus on that speed aspect and let the size take care of itself."
