College basketball preview: Purdue vs. Eastern Illinois

WEST LAFAYETTE -- Purdue will go for a 4-0 start to the season at 7 p.m. today when it takes on Eastern Illinois at Mackey Arena. Here's a look ahead as the Boilermakers (3-0) prep for the Panthers (2-1).

  • The Boilermakers are third in the Big Ten in scoring with 89 points per game. Purdue is shooting 51 percent from the field as a team and 56.9 percent from inside the arc. All of those numbers are in the top-50 nationally. Four players, including Northrop grad Bryson Scott, scored in double figures in Purdue's last outing, a three-point win against Rider. The Boilers are also No. 14 in the country with 1.23 points per possession, but face an Eastern Illinois team that gave up just 66 points per game in its first three outings.
  • The Boilermakers have 11 players averaging double-digit minutes so far this season. Only three -- senior guard Terone Johnson (26), sophomore guard Ronnie Johnson (25.3) and graduate transfer forward Errick Peck (21) -- are getting more than 20 minutes per game.
