Churubusco man dies in crash

A Churubusco man died today in a single-car crash while trying to elude the town marshal, Indiana State Police said.

Tristan Andrew Bender, 26, was traveling east at a high rate of speed in the 6900 block of East Whitley County Road 150 North, just west of Johnson Road, at the time of the 1:54 p.m. crash, state police at Fort Wayne said in a statement.

The marshal had been in pursuit with emergency equipment activated, the statement said. It did not say why the pursuit was taking place.

Police said Bender's vehicle traveled left of center and went off the north side of the road, striking a tree head-on. Bender, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car and was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne by helicopter. He was pronounced dead there a short time later.

The crash remains under investigation. The Whitley County sheriff's department and EMS and the Churubusco Fire Department assisted at the scene.
