Police and fire

Masked bandits beat, rob welder

Two masked robbers beat a Welders Services Inc. employee Saturday before stealing money and fleeing from the store, leaving behind a trail of cash.

An employee told Fort Wayne police that two men, one armed with a handgun, entered Welders Services, 1725 Edsall Ave., Saturday and grabbed him by his neck from behind the cash register, according to a police report.

The first man was described as 18 to 20 years old with a thin build, wearing a brown Carhartt-style coat and a mask.

The second man was in his 30s with a tattoo on his neck. He was wearing a mask and dark-colored windbreaker and was armed with a handgun.

The employee said the armed man slammed his head to the floor twice. The employee had a large bump and small cut on his forehead, police said.

The second man took money out of the register and then both men ran out the front door, the report said.

Officers arrived shortly after 11 a.m. and found several dollar bills leading from the doorway to the cash register.
