Key matchup: The Irish will need to defend against the 3-pointer for the second game in a row. Santa Clara made 10 of 22 3-pointers in Notre Dame’s 84-69 home win Friday, and the Black Knights like to shoot from behind the arc as well. Army shot 44 3-pointers in its season opener against Air Force, and in its next three games, the team shot 31, 39 and 21 3-pointers. Coach Mike Brey told reporters after Friday’s game that he expects to use a smaller lineup at times today against Army. Brey played guards Eric Atkins, Grant, Pat Connaughton and Demetrius Jackson around forward Austin Burgett against Santa Clara to defend the perimeter and create a smoother-running offense.
The skinny: Notre Dame leads the series 8-0, defeating Army 88-47 in the last meeting on Dec. 21, 2006. The Irish have three players averaging double figures in scoring with Atkins (13 ppg) and Connaughton (11 ppg) joining Grant. The only Knight averaging double figures is Wilson. Former New Haven standout V.J. Beachem didn’t play for Notre Dame in Friday’s game. He averaged 5.7 minutes and 1 point in the first three games.
