Whither the Heisman Trophy?

So what do we do now with the Gnarled Little Stiff-Arming Guy?

I refer, of course, to the Heisman Trophy, and heaven knows what's going to happen with it now. For those who haven't been paying attention, a brief recap:

* The clear frontrunner, Jameis Winston of Florida State, is suddenly a gigantic dilemma. Prosecutors in Florida are investigating a December 2012 sexual assault allegation against Winston that got swept under the rug the first time around, and it doesn't look good for Winston. If he's charged this week (when prosecutors say they'll move on this), you can take him off the board. Or at least one would hope.

* Remember Johnny Manziel? The 2012 winner was actually putting up bigger numbers than last season until Saturday, when he ran into LSU and became surpemely mortal again in a Texas A&M loss. So suddenly his chances have dimmed.

* Meanwhile, the third major candidate, Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, got flamed along with his Ducks by Arizona, 42-16. Mariota threw for 308 yards and two scores, but he also threw two picks. Moreover, it was the Ducks' second loss this year. So he took a step backward, too.

That leaves ... well, who? You might say Teddy Bridgewater of Louisville, but even though the Cardinals have gone 10-1, they haven't really played anybody. Ditto for Braxton Miller and Carlos Hyde of Ohio State. Baylor dark horse Bryce Petty's shot took a hit with the blowout loss to Oklahoma State.

Conclusion?

Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron suddenly looks like a solid choice. Seriously.
