Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly had more details Tuesday on the injury that cost the Irish starting center Nick Martin for the final regular-season game and bowl game.
Kelly said Martin suffered an MCL tear and will be sidelined for six months.
"He will miss spring ball, but certainly have him back training aggressively through the spring months, have no questions that he will be able to be fully recovered for the fall," Kelly said.
Matt Hegarty, who filled in for Martin for just more than three quarters in Saturday's 23-13 win over BYU, will start for the No. 25 Irish (8-3) in the regular-season finale at No. 8 Stanford (9-2) this weekend.
Kelly said Conor Hanratty, who has played at both guard spots this season, will be the backup.
