Cathedral takes 5A title

– Ohio State-bound Terry McLaurin scored three touchdowns, totaled 196 all-purpose yards and turned in a stalwart effort on defense in helping Indianapolis Cathedral to its first Class 5A state football championship, a 42-18 victory Friday over Westfield.

McLaurin, a 6-foot, 190-pound senior, caught six passes for 91 yards, rushed three times for 79 yards and had 26 return yards.

Fifth-ranked Cathedral was the three-time defending Class 4A champion. But the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s new postseason success rule moved the Irish up to the next class.

Cathedral, 10-5 as an independent, plays a season that is a mixture of upper-class state teams as well as Cincinnati powerhouses Moeller and St. Xavier and Louisville (Ky) Trinity.

Class 3A

ANDREAN 35, BREBEUF JESUIT 27: Donovan Chandler returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown with 1:11 left as the 59ers held for the title.

Matt Desomer threw for 137 yards and a touchdown for Andrean (15-0). Trevor Berg ran for 165 yards and two scores.

Aaron Banks threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns for the Braves (11-4), while Chandler Grau caught eight passes for 168 yards.

Brebeuf Jesuit had scored with 3:03 left in the third on a 34-yard pass, but the Braves missed the extra point and trailed 28-27.

After Chandler’s interception return in the closing minute or so, the Braves came up short with an incomplete pass into the end zone as time expired.

Class A

TRI-CENTRAL 20, EASTERN HANCOCK 10: Cody Howell threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score to lead the Trojans to their first Class A state title.

Howell threw two early interceptions, but he made several critical plays to make up for them during Friday’s game at Lucas Oil Stadium. Howell finished with 167 yards passing for Tri-Central (14-1), which won in its first finals appearance. Garrett Kelley added 78 yards and a touchdown for the Trojans.

Spencer Gilbert carried 28 times for 145 yards and a touchdown for Eastern (14-1).

Eastern defeated Tri-Central 47-35 in the season opener for both teams on Aug. 23. Eastern averaged 56 points this season.
