Komets blanked by Wings

Joel Martin made 21 saves for Kalamazoo as it defeated the Komets 4-0 in front of 2,476 fans at Wings Stadium on Friday.

It was the Komets’ first regular-season game against the Wings since they hired former Fort Wayne captain Colin Chaulk as an assistant coach. And, earlier in the day, the Wings signed Matt Firman, who was released by the Komets on Monday.

Firman assisted on the second Aaron Clarke goal, which was short-handed and made it 3-0 at 10:21 of the third period. Matt Caria put the game out of reach just less than two minutes later.

Also scoring for the Wings was Mike Matczak, as Fort Wayne goalie Cody Reichard stopped 38 of 42 shots.

The Komets (6-7-3) are 1-3-1 in their last five games. Kalamazoo (7-6-1) pulled into a tie with the Komets for third in the North Division.

Kalamazoo was 0 for 6 on the power play. Fort Wayne was 0 for 5.

The Komets play host to Florida tonight at Memorial Coliseum. They Komets lost 3-1 to the Everblades on Thursday night.

Note: Nick Tuzzolino, the Komets’ captain who was traded to Elmira on Monday, was signed to a tryout agreement by Rochester of the higher-level American Hockey League.
