Maybe you missed it in all the holiday hoo-ha, but it was a very good weekend for iPFW basketball.
First, the men's team nearly got Illinois in Champaign, losing 57-55 after leading by eight at halftime. In the closing seconds, Pierre Bland drove for a layup to cut it to two, then intercepted the inbounds pass at midcourt, but couldn't get a shot off before the horn.
Yesterday it was the women's turn. And they got it done.
Amanda Hyde's 23 points led the Mastodon women to an 81-76 win over Michigan State, ranked 18th in one poll and 21st in another. It was the first victory over a Big Ten school, and the first over a ranked school, in the program's history.
It also left the women 4-4 and riding a four-game winning streak. The men, meanwhile, are 6-3, and their three losses have come by a total of four points.
The rest of the Summit League might want to start paying attention.
