FORT WAYNE -- Fort Wayne police are investigating a fatal shooting in the 3800 block of Oliver Street on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said they were called to the area about 3:25 p.m. on a report of a shooting.
Officers located an adult man in a home in the block suffering from a gunshot wound or wounds, police said in a statement.
The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but was pronounced dead at the hospital, the statement said.
If it is declared a homicide, Tuesday's shooting would be the 44th in Allen County this year. All but two have happened in the city of Fort Wayne.
The record year for homicides in Fort Wayne, until Tuesday, was 1997, which saw 44 homicides. Those victims were shot, stabbed, drugged and beaten, and one baby was shaken to death.
Witnesses to today's shooting told police they heard multiple shots and saw two men leaving an Oliver Street home in a maroon van heading toward Rudisill Boulevard.
Police were establishing a crime scene and interviewing witnesses Tuesday afternoon.
City police, the Allen County coroner's office and the county prosecutor's office are investigating, police said.
They asked anyone with information to contact city police at 260-427-1222 or Crime Stoppers at 260-436-7867.
Police Chief Rusty York has previously attributed this year's violence to a lifestyle of gangs, drugs and guns.
"We're just seeing this time and time again," York said in October. "It's unfortunate and it's disturbing, obviously, but we continue to work with our federal partners, we have our own gang units and neighborhood response teams. We have our own detectives working on this."
"There seems to be these continuing beefs between these groups," York said, adding the retribution is often shootings or robberies.
Of the shooting deaths this year, two were police-action shootings, and a third was a man who died from complications after being shot in 1980.
