Golson nears return as Irish assistant exits

Notre Dame is on track to get back an important player on its offense, but the Irish are losing an offensive coach.

Coach Brian Kelly told on Tuesday that he expects quarterback Everett Golson to be re-admitted to the university in mid-December. If Golson returns, he will have a new offensive coordinator as Chuck Martin is leaving Notre Dame to take over the head coaching job at Miami of Ohio.

“I’ve been assured that based upon all of the information that has been provided that he’s going to be readmitted on Dec. 13, and that information has been provided to admissions,” Kelly told about Golson.

Golson, who was suspended for a semester because of an academic issue, would not be allowed to practice with the team until after the fall semester ends Dec. 20, a Notre Dame spokesman said.

And because Notre Dame’s bowl options appear to be closer to Christmas, the team would likely leave for its bowl before Golson can practice. Golson is not allowed to travel with the Irish or practice at the bowl site.

Martin, who came to Notre Dame with Kelly in 2010, was announced as the RedHawks’ coach by Miami on Tuesday.

A Notre Dame spokesman said Mike Denbrock, the Irish’s outside receivers coach and passing coordinator, will serve as the offensive coordinator in the bowl game.

Martin worked with defensive backs for the first two seasons with the Irish before switching to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach the last two seasons.

Martin replaces interim coach Mike Bath at Miami, which fired coach Don Treadwell and offensive coordinator John Klacik on Oct. 6. The RedHawks went 0-12 this year.

“I look forward to getting back to the excellence Miami stands for and am excited to hit the ground running,” Martin said in a statement.

Miami will introduce Martin at a news conference today. Martin led Grand Valley State to NCAA Division II championships in 2005 and 2006 after taking over the program in 2004 when Kelly left to coach Central Michigan.
