He's out -- even if the athletic director hasn't gotten the official phone call from the money men instructing him to make the official phone call.

Texas two-step

Take heart, Mr. College Football Coach Fallen On Hard Times. It could always be worse, even if you've just gone 0-12 and the AD isn't taking your phone calls anymore.

You could be Mack Brown down there at Texas.

He's on a recruiting trip to Florida right now, while everyone in America says he's been fired -- except the only people who can officially fire him. So while Brown goes about his bidness down there in the Sunshine State, trying to convince kids to come to Austin and wear the burnt orange, various news outlets are already saying Mike Tomlin and Jim Harbaugh are in the running to succeed him.

Even though, again, Brown isn't officially out yet.

It's a carnival act you only get in places such as Texas, where football is not only king but the Holy See. The alumni have more money than God, speaking of which, and in Texas money is power like it is in no other place. And that power wants Brown out.

So, he's out -- even if the athletic director hasn't gotten the official phone call from the money men instructing him to make the official phone call.

What a show.
