IPFW narrows AD search to 4

FORT WAYNE – The search for a new IPFW athletic director has been narrowed to four finalists, the university announced Friday.

The finalists are IPFW interim athletic director Kelley Hartley Hutton, Wisconsin-Stevens Point AD Daron Montgomery, California-Davis associate AD Nona Richardson and Oregon State associate AD Mark Spencer.

Campus visits will be in January, with Spencer Jan. 21-22, Hartley Hutton on Jan. 23-24, Richardson on Jan. 26-27 and Montgomery on January 30-31.

The candidates to replace Tommy Bell, who departed in July for the AD position at Western Illinois, will tour the campus and meet with administrators, faculty, athletes and students during their visits.

Search committee chairman and IPFW comptroller Daniel Gebhart said Friday each candidate will be asked questions by the search committee and other IPFW personnel, as well as be able to ask questions themselves.

"They have to feel comfortable with us as well," Gebhart said. "If they are offered the job, I want them to feel like it is a situation they want.

"We want someone who is good with the administration side, has a good rapport with student-athletes and also be a big part of our fund-raising."

Gebhart said a possible timeline has the committee making a recommendation to the administration in early February, an offer extended later that month and the new AD in place by late spring or early summer.

Hartley Hutton has been the interim director of athletics at IPFW since August, is the school's women's volleyball head coach and was previously the school's senior woman administrator.

Montgomery is the director of athletics at Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Prior to working at UW-Stevens Point, he was at the Detroit-Mercy in other roles.

Richardson is currently the executive senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator at California-Davis and spent 13 months at the school as interim athletic director and was also at Ball State as associate athletic director.

Spencer is the senior associate athletic director at Oregon State.

He has been at Oregon State since 2006, also serving as associate athletic director prior to his promotion.

The athletic director search committee is comprised of Gebhart, student-athlete Malcolm White, women's studies professor Janet Badia, faculty athletic representative Elliott Blumenthal, men's basketball coach Tony Jasick, senior women's administrator Christine Kuznar, accounting faculty member Cynthia Lloyd, office of institutional equity member Christine Marcuccilli, women's soccer coach Margaret Saurin, compliance officer Wendy Wilson, Indiana-Purdue Student Government Association representative Raija Ochola and external members Rick Evans and Larry Lee.
