FORT WAYNE – A third SAC football coach is stepping down.
South Side athletic director Tim Burton confirmed Friday that Eddie Fields resigned after three years as the Archers’ coach.
Recently, Northrop’s Tim Martone and Wayne’s Robert Brown also resigned.
Burton cited Fields’ desire to spend more time with his family and maybe relocate out of state.
Fields was 10-21 at South Side.
The Archers were 3-7 this past season and were involved in an altercation in the third quarter of a road game against Indianapolis Tech on Sept. 27 in which the game was stopped.
The play occurred after a tackle near the Tech sideline and involved several players and coaches from both schools.
Eventually, the two schools were each put on probation and both head coaches (Fields and Tech’s Emil Ekiyor) were suspended one game.
Ekiyor also recently resigned.
Also, an assistant coach for both teams was suspended the rest of the year and several players were also suspended one game, nine for Tech and two for South Side.
The game was counted as a double forfeit, with both teams getting a loss.
In other coaching news, Fremont’s Nick Maksimchuk submitted his resignation, according to athletic director Roger Probst.
Probst said the resignation will be considered at Monday’s school board meeting.
Maksimchuk was 16-46 in six years at Fremont.
Maksimchuk cited family considerations, including spending more time with his 2-year-old son.
Fields was unavailable for comment.
