  • Copycat Republicans dangerous for city
I have been a conservative since I was 21 years old. I am now 67. I have also been a blue-collar worker for my entire working life. I was a firefighter and am a general building contractor.
  • Repentant gays can find a home in the church
It was disheartening to see in the July 20 paper the string of letters in favor of the homosexual lifestyle. Perhaps Jerry Ross (July 7) just gets tired of the way the issues are skewed by the media and others.
  • Dedicated professionals making schools work
Any parent has an opinion about which schools his or her children should attend. It’s an important matter, as the article “Schools vital to choosing home” (July 20) outlined.

Bums posing as poor waste of our resources

In feeding the poor, we need to distinguish between sheep and wolves.

The poor are not the same as bums.

The poor need help to get through personal or economic crises. Bums demand help to support their chosen lifestyle, namely, doing their own thing on someone else’s nickel.

They seek to extort charity from believers in the name of God. But they will also steal, cheat on government welfare and do whatever they might get away with to redistribute wealth from taxpayers to freeloaders.

The poor we have with us always. Bums we also have with us always, posing as poor.

Since wolves may dress themselves in sheep’s clothing, the wise must first be discerning before they are generous.

Obedience to Christ’s command to feed the poor does not obligate us to waste resources on bums.

‘Doonesbury’ unfairly characterized military

I am appalled The Journal Gazette published a comic strip depicting the military as an organization that allows rape to happen without consequences.

On Dec. 8 The Journal Gazette published a comic strip by Garry Trudeau (“Doonesbury”) that depicted the military in a horrible and disgusting way. I have served in the Army for more than 14 years and have never been so disappointed as I was when I read the comics that day. The military does have problems with sexual assaults, and they are confronting the problem in the best way possible.

This comic strip writer never served in the military, and it seems he thinks the military treats all women with disrespect. Forget the fact that the military has opened all jobs to women that were previously closed and is doing everything possible to create an equal playing field.

I think this writer should spend some time on the front line and maybe his opinion would change when he saw men and women working together to preserve our freedom only to allow an idiot like this write his lovely comic strip.
