VALPARAISO, Ind. – A 25-year-old northwestern Indiana man found guilty of felony charges of neglect of a dependent and battery in the death of his live-in girlfriend’s 7-month-old son has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.
The Times of Munster reports Benjamin Willis II continued to maintain his innocence during the sentencing Monday. A jury convicted him last month in the death of 7-month-old Keagan Fishel.
Porter County officials say Keagan died in March 2012 of blunt force trauma to the head, suffered multiple skull fractures and hemorrhages resulting from “violent and extremely forceful” action.
The child’s mother, Sasha Sabates, told the court of the pain of losing her son, saying Willis had taken everything from her.
Willis says he plans to appeal.
