Notre Dame, Purdue to play in Lucas Oil Stadium

Notre Dame and Purdue will clash in Lucas Oil Stadium next season.

Purdue announced on its website Thursday that its game against the Irish will be played Sept. 13 in Indianapolis. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The game will be Notre Dame's Shamrock Series game, which is an Irish home game that the program moves to an offsite location, a university spokesman said in an email.

"We are excited to bring this great instate rivalry game to Indianapolis next season," Purdue athletics director Morgan Burke said in a statement. "Both schools have great fan and alumni bases there, so it will make for an entertaining evening of college football."

The Boilermakers defeated the Irish 23-21 the last time the teams played in Indianapolis when they met in the Hoosier Dome on Sept. 8, 1984.

The instate rivalry will take a six-year break after next season with the next scheduled game set for Sept. 19, 2020, at Purdue.

Notre Dame will then play host to Purdue on Sept. 18, 2021. Then Purdue will play host for the game on Sept. 14, 2024, before returning to Notre Dame for a game on Sept. 13, 2025. The programs are working on a date and a neutral site location for a game in 2026.

The rivalry has been interrupted as the two schools deal with new schedule models.

Notre Dame will begin playing five games against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents every season starting next season as part of the Irish's deal to join the conference in all sports except football and hockey.

Purdue is working on setting a schedule that will include nine Big Ten games.

"(Notre Dame athletic director) Jack (Swarbrick) and I tried everything we could to keep the series going without interruption," Burke said. "But, between the Big Ten going to a nine-game schedule and Notre Dame's affiliation with the Atlantic Coast Conference, it just didn't work out. The series is important to both schools, and we are pleased that we are able to extend it through 2026."
