9 foreign language films remain in running for Oscar

The roster for possible foreign language Oscar nominees has been narrowed from 76 to a shortlist of nine, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced Friday.

Five films from the list will be chosen in January before the Oscar nominations are announced the morning of Jan. 16.

Films on the shortlist are:

  • Belgium, “The Broken Circle Breakdown”
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina, “An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker”
  • Cambodia, “The Missing Picture”
  • Denmark, “The Hunt”
  • Germany, “Two Lives”
  • Hong Kong, “The Grandmaster”
  • Hungary, “The Notebook”
  • Italy, “The Great Beauty”
  • Palestine, “Omar”
