Delay likely in Fort Wayne postal consolidation

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The U.S. Postal Service processing center in South Bend likely won’t be closing in February as first planned.

Postal Service spokeswoman Mary Dando said officials are waiting on decisions from the agency’s Washington headquarters on moving ahead with consolidating the South Bend center with one in Fort Wayne.

Dando told the South Bend Tribune ( she doesn’t know when that decision will be made.

The South Bend center has about 160 workers, with Dando saying 35 jobs could be affected by the consolidation plan.

Postal workers union local president Rick Dainelli said he’s not surprised that the consolidation might be delayed since there doesn’t seem to be enough time for changes to be made and equipment moved by February.
