Indiana U. to leave group over boycott of Israel

– The president of Indiana University is criticizing a decision by the American Studies Association to endorse a boycott of Israeli universities.

Michael McRobbie says the university plans to withdraw immediately as an ASA institutional member, saying such boycotts have a profound chilling effect on academic freedom. He says universities must be clear and unequivocal in rejecting them.

The American Studies Association last week endorsed the boycott, saying it condemns the United States’ significant role aiding and abetting Israel’s violations of human rights against Palestinians and its occupation of Palestinian lands through its use of the veto in the U.N. Security Council.

McRobbie says IU values its academic relationships with colleagues and institutions around the world, including many important ones with institutions in Israel.
