Notre Dame lets Rutgers hang around

NEW YORK – Notre Dame could only gain a small advantage after the third quarter as it takes a 16-13 lead over Rutgers into the fourth quarter of the Pinstripe Bowl.

The Irish have let the Scarlet Knights remain too close in a game they have a 71-35 advantage in plays run and a 380-171 advantage in yards.

The Irish will start the fourth quarter on the Knights' 33-yard line.

Kyle Brindza got two chances to give Notre Dame the lead with just more than 6 minutes left in the third quarter.

After missing a 31-yard field goal attempt, Brindza got to try from 26 yards out as Rutgers was called for running into the kicker. He converted on the second try as the Irish took a 16-13 lead with 6:03 to play in the third.
