NEW YORK – Notre Dame running back George Atkinson III was suspended for today's Pinstripe Bowl against Rutgers at Yankee Stadium.

Coach Brian Kelly announced the suspension of Atkinson and backup cornerback Jalen Brown for violation of team rules about two hours prior to kickoff.

Atkinson gave some insight onto why he was suspended, posting on his Twitter account: "For those of you who are wondering I was suspended from today's game for texting friends and family during team meal, as I did all season."

Atkinson's post was quickly deleted.

Atkinson, a junior, was unable to take hold of the Irish's No. 1 running back spot this season, rushing for 555 yards on 93 carries with three touchdowns.
