College basketball preview: Canisius at Notre Dame

Notre Dame leaders: Garrick Sherman (14.3 ppg), Eric Atkins (4.3 apg), Sherman (7.4 rpg)

Canisius leaders: Billy Baron (20 ppg), Baron (4.7 apg), Chris Manhertz (5.8 rpg)

Key matchup: A pair of senior guards could make the difference in today’s game as Notre Dame’s Atkins and Canisius’ Baron square off. The 6-foot-2, 182-pound Atkins is averaging 11.8 points to go along with his team high in assists, and he plays a team-high 35.8 minutes per game. The 6-2, 195-pound Barron leads the Golden Griffins in points and assists, and he also doesn’t get off the floor much in games, averaging a team-high 38.1 minutes.

The skinny: Notre Dame will play its first game without senior guard Jerian Grant, who was suspended for the spring semester because of an academic issue. Grant, who was one of the Irish’s captains, was the team’s leading scorer (19 ppg) and led the Irish in assists (6.2 per game) and steals (24). … Notre Dame coach Mike Brey named seniors Tom Knight, a forward, and Sherman, a center, as captains for the rest of the season. They join Pat Connaughton and Atkins as captains. … Today is Notre Dame’s final nonconference game of the year as the Irish open play in the Atlantic Coast Conference on Jan. 4 against Duke at home. … Notre Dame’s leads the series against Canisius 19-4.
