INDIANAPOLIS – A violent weekend in Indianapolis has added to the sharp jump in homicides in the city this year.
Police are investigating three homicides that occurred during the past weekend. Indianapolis police reported Sunday that the number of homicides for the year reached 140, including 16 that were determined to be justifiable.
The number is the highest rate the city has seen since 2006, but Indianapolis Police Chief Rick Hite said residents have little to worry about unless they’re engaged in criminal activity. Hite said in a statement that “any intentional death by violent means is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” but noted that many of the victims and suspects had criminal records.
