Cadets a work in progress

To say Concordia is a new team this year would be a major understatement.

The Cadets lost four starters and six of their top seven players from a team that went 23-5 and lost in the Class 3A state championship game 73-70 in overtime to Greensburg.

Senior D.J. McCall, an IUPUI recruit, is surrounded with youth this year, including four sophomore starters - Reggie Tharp, Mitch Paradine, Cam Weikart and Paxton Bergdoll.

The key, Concordia coach Josh Eggold said, is in the teaching.

"There has to be a lot more teaching, and there's got to be a lot more moments where our coaches have a lot more patience," Eggold said. "And it's got to be on being positive with them. As far as last year, most of these kids were along for the ride so they were there with it. They saw a great team in terms of guys who cared about each other, came together and executed. We are playing fairly hard, but they aren't executing with patience and at a high level yet."

The Cadets are off to a 3-4 start but have shown signs of being a pretty good team and lost only by seven points, 53-46, to a talented Homestead team in which McCall was held scoreless on 0 of 5 shooting.

Concordia trailed only 49-46 with 11 seconds left against the Spartans (8-3).

"These years are really important to develop a hunger within us," Eggold said of the team.
