Man sentenced to 8 years for second robbery of same drugstore

Schlau

– A 44-year-old man was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison for the September robbery of the same Walgreens that he’d robbed a few years earlier.

Michael Schlau of the 1300 block of West Washington Boulevard was on parole for a 2011 pharmacy robbery when police said he robbed the drugstore at 330 W. State Blvd.

He demanded the prescription painkiller Opana and reached for his waistband as though he had a gun, according to court documents.

A police officer caught him after a brief foot chase and found the Opana in his possession, but no gun, according to court documents.

Schlau was charged with robbery, possession of a controlled substance and resisting law enforcement; in December, he pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a controlled substance.

On Friday, Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull sentenced Schlau to eight years on the robbery charge and three years on the drug possession charge, with the sentences to be served at the same time.

At the time of the September robbery, Schlau was on parole from a four-year prison sentence handed down in 2012 – for the July 2011 robbery of the same Walgreens for the same drug in the same way.

Police said Schlau had given the pharmacist a note and had tugged at his waistband as though he had a gun. He made off with about $5,000 worth of Opana in various strengths.

Police tracked him down in that case by a fingerprint on the note handed to the pharmacist.

When she sentenced him Friday, Gull noted his extensive criminal history of more than 30 misdemeanor convictions and seven felony convictions from 1985 to 2013, according to court documents.

She ordered him to pay $1,382 in restitution to Walgreens, according to court documents.
