Updates on trade

Mike Vaskivuo, the 2012 Playoff MVP with the Komets, left the team Dec. 26 in hopes of being traded.

That wish was granted today, when the Komets sent Vaskivuo and defenseman Nik Pokulok to the Elmira Jackals for forwards Matt Carter and Christian Ouellet.

"These aren't perimeter players. They go to the net and this gives us some extra size," said Fort Wayne coach Gary Graham, whose team is 13-11-6 overall but on a 2-0-1 surge.

Carter, 26, is 6-foot-1, 224 pounds, and he had nine goals and 15 points in 29 games this season with Elmira.

He is a former star at the University of Price Edward Island, for which he had 18 goals and 38 points in 28 games as a senior in 2011-12. Last season, he skated for San Francisco, Las Vegas and Elmira of the ECHL, scoring five goals and 20 points in 58 games.

"He was expected to produce a lot as a rookie last year and that's the thing: some ECHL teams don't have patience and you see some movement with them," Graham said. "There's potential and I think we're getting him at the right time. He's hot right now."

Ouellet, 22, is 6 feet, 195 pounds, and he had three goals and 10 points in 19 games this season with Elmira. Last season with Gwinnett and San Francisco, he had 17 goals and 37 points in 66 games, and he was endorsed by Komets defenseman Simon Danis-Pepin, who played with him in San Francisco last season.

Carter and Ouellet were slated to fly into Fort Wayne on Tuesday and are expected to play Wednesday at Memorial Coliseum against the Kalamazoo Wings (16-11-3).

"I like both of them," Graham said. "When we played them up there in Elmira … I liked what I saw from them. They're both bigger bodies and both will skate and shoot the puck a lot. They are offensive guys and are good around the net."

Tickets for Sunday's game, which was postponed because of inclement weather, will be honored Wednesday at the Coliseum.

Vaskivuo, 27, who spent last season in France, after leading the Komets to the 2012 CHL title, had five goals and 21 points in 23 games this season with Fort Wayne.

Pokulok, 23 had two goals and four points in 16 games.
