The IPFW men won their fifth straight game by holding off host Denver 67-64 on Thursday night.
The Mastodons (15-5, 3-0 Summit) trailed 40-31 after giving up an 11-0 run in the second half. A 16-2 run, though, put IPFW back on top, 60-53, with 1:50 remaining before the Pioneers (7-10, 0-2) made one final run.
But Pierre Bland hit two free throws with 11 seconds left, and Denver’s Brett Olson missed the tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Mo Evans led IPFW with 18 points. Evans made 6 of 7 from the field, including 4 of 5 on 3-pointers.
Also for the Mastodons, Steve Forbes had 16 points and Bland 13. Luis Jacobo added nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
SOUTH DAKOTA 69, IUPUI 57: In Vermillion, S.D., Brandon Bos and Trevor Gruis combined to score 39 points for the Coyotes.
South Dakota (7-9, 2-0 Summit) outscored IUPUI (5-15, 0-3) 22-8 in the final 11:24 of the game after IUPUI had taken a 49-47 lead.
IPFW 81, DENVER 78: At the Gates Center, Amanda Hyde had 27 points as the host Mastodons held off the Pioneers in the second half.
IPFW (9-8, 2-1 Summit) outscored Denver (3-14, 1-1) 45-34 in the first half but trailed in the final minutes before getting critical free throws by Hyde down the stretch. Hyde, who scored eight points in the final six minutes, made 13 of 14 from the line for the Mastodons, who were outscored 44-36 in the second half.
Haley Seibert added 24 points for IPFW.
