Exhibit of Ansel Adams photos coming to Indy

– An exhibit of some of famed landscape photographer Ansel Adams’ favorite photos is coming to a downtown Indianapolis museum.

The collection of more than 80 photos Adams personally selected from his catalogue opens March 1 at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art museum.

The exhibit running through Aug. 3 focuses largely on images of the vast spaces of the American West, from Yosemite to the Pacific Coast, but also includes architectural studies, portraits and photos taken in Alaska and Hawaii.

When the Eiteljorg hosted the same exhibit in 2001 the lines of visitors sometimes stretched outside museum’s entrance.

Eiteljorg vice president James Nottage says Adams’ teenage visit to Yosemite sparked his photography career. He says the exhibit “could inspire the next Ansel Adams.”

Adams died in 1984.
