6 pounds of pot doesn't flush in drug bust

It started out as a simple follow-up after a street sign was struck in New Haven. It ended with an officer hurt by a slammed door, nearly 6 pounds of marijuana being fished out of a toilet and two men facing multiple drug charges.

The New Haven Police Department said an officer was in the 2000 block of Tweedwood Circle in the Tanglewood neighborhood about 2 p.m. Wednesday after learning that a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run with the street sign was at one of the houses.

Blake M. Colbourne, 23, slammed the door and injured the officer – but not before the scent of marijuana wafted outdoors – according to a statement issued by the department. It said Colbourne and John A. Lopez, 29, surrendered to officers shortly afterward.

Police detectives got a search warrant and reported finding packages of pot in the toilet in an apparent attempt to get rid of it.

Heroin, ecstasy, drug paraphernalia and a large amount of cash also were seized, police said.

Colbourne was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, dealing in marijuana, possession of a controlled substance (two counts) and battery to a police officer.

Lopez was charged with possession of marijuana, dealing in marijuana and possession of a controlled substance (two counts).

Their bond amounts were not immediately available.
