NACS extends school year, plans to apply for waiver

Northwest Allen County Schools officials announced a plan Friday for making up missed days because of inclement weather.

School will be now be session on Feb. 3, Feb. 24, March 14 and April 18 – days that NACS students would have had off if not for the cancellations – and the school year will be extended through June 3.

NACS Superintendent Chris Himsel said in an email that the district will be applying for a waiver from the state Department of Education for the class time missed Jan. 6 and 7.

If the waiver is not approved, schools will be in session on June 4 and 5.

Himsel said the district will wait to determine if additional waiver requests are needed as winter progresses to avoid rescheduling the district’s graduation date set for June 8.
