K’s rally to win opener of series

The Komets defeated Elmira 4-3 on Friday night, and the Jackals were done in by some familiar faces in the first of three games in three days at First Arena.

Trailing by one in the third period, the Komets got goals from defenseman Jordon Southorn at 3:09 and forward Matt Carter at 9:32 to snag the victory.

Southorn and Carter were both acquired this season in trades with the Jackals for, respectively, Nick Tuzzolino and Mike Vaskivuo.

The Komets had lost back-to-back games coming in, including a 5-3 loss to Elmira at Memorial Coliseum on Jan. 17.

The victory improved Fort Wayne to 5-2-3 in its last 10 games.

Goaltender Andrey Makarov, who had missed the previous five games with a head injury, returned to the lineup but was the backup to Ben Meisner.

Meisner stopped 30 of 33 shots. He gave up two goals to Jordan Hobbs and one, early in the third period, to Jakub Culek.

Elmira (12-20-4) got saves on 26 of 30 shots from Brad Phillips.

Fort Wayne (16-13-8) also got goals from forwards Lincoln Kaleigh Schrock, who opened the scoring 8:18 into the first period, and Scott Fleming, who made it 2-1 at 17:38.

Schrock fought Harry Young in the game.

The Komets were 0 for 4 on the power play.

They are scoreless in their last 18 opportunities over six games and have scored once in their last 27 over eight games.
