Suicide suspected in death of Bangladesh survivor

– Bangladesh police are investigating a case of suspected suicide by a seamstress who survived the collapse of a multi-story building that killed more than 1,100 last year.

The 27-year-old woman, who police identified as Salma, apparently hanged herself in her rented home in a suburb of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, on Friday. Police have recovered her body, and investigator Kamal Hossain said Monday that he was waiting for the autopsy report.

Salma was one of about 2,500 workers who survived the collapse of an eight-story building that housed several garment factories. Authorities say 1,129 people died in the world’s worst garment industry disaster, highlighting an industry with poor safety standards and often dangerous working condition.

Salma’s husband said she suffered head injuries in the disaster, but had recovered from them.
