Denbrock named Notre Dame offensive coordinator

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has his offensive staff in place.

Kelly officially announced the promotion of Mike Denbrock to offensive coordinator Thursday. Kelly and Denbrock are scheduled to meet with the media at noon Friday.

The move had been expected after Denbrock served as the Irish's interim offensive coordinator for the team's 29-16 win over Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 28 at Yankee Stadium.

Denbrock, who has served as Notre Dame's outside receivers coach and passing game coordinator the last two seasons, replaced Chuck Martin leading up to the bowl game after Martin left to become the head coach at Miami (Ohio).

Denbrock will continue to coach the outside receivers next season.

Kelly named Matt LaFleur the quarterbacks coach at Notre Dame last Friday. LaFleur had spent the previous four seasons in the same capacity with the Washington Redskins, and he is expected to work mainly with the Irish's younger quarterbacks, sophomore Malik Zaire – who didn't play last season – and incoming freshman DeShone Kizer.

Kelly said he plans to return to calling plays this season and work closely with QB Everett Golson, who returns to Notre Dame after missing last season because of an academic issue. Martin had called plays last season.

Denbrock originally coached at Notre Dame from 2002-04, handling offensive tackles and tight ends.

He returned to the Irish in 2010 as a member of Kelly's first staff at Notre Dame, handling tight ends that season and in 2011.

Denbrock has been a coordinator for Kelly before when the two were together at Grand Valley State.

Denbrock was the Lakers' offensive coordinator under Kelly from 1992-95 and was Kelly's defensive coordinator at Grand Valley State from 1996-98.

Kelly and Denbrock were also both graduate assistants at Grand Valley State in 1987.
