Key matchup: Two the ACC’s top guards square off tonight as Notre Dame’s Atkins and Syracuse’ Ennis match wits. Atkins, a senior, is third in the conference in assists and is sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.4. He scored 24 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in overtime, in Saturday’s 76-73 win over Boston College. Ennis has been one of the most impressive freshmen in college basketball. He leads the ACC in assists and is second in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.9. He had 14 points and matched a career high with nine assists in Saturday’s 91-89 overtime win over Duke.
The skinny: Syracuse is expected to rise to No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll this afternoon as the Orange remained undefeated and Arizona suffered its first loss, falling 60-59 to California, on Saturday. Notre Dame ended a three-game losing streak with its victory over Boston College. Tonight’s game matches up two former Big East teams; both entered the ACC this season. Syracuse leads the all-time series 25-19 and has won four of the last five. Notre Dame’s last win against Syracuse was on Jan. 21, 2012, when the Irish upset the then-No. 1 Orange at Purcell Pavilion.
