Former Studebaker complex may get historic status

– Some South Bend residents want to seek national historic landmark status for the remnants of the city’s former Studebaker Corp. complex.

Indiana Landmarks regional director Todd Zeiger says national historic status would make the buildings eligible for federal rehabilitation tax credits.

Zeiger tells the South Bend Tribune (http://bit.ly/1eXj1Nf) that could help the building owners make improvements.

The proposed Studebaker-Railroad Corridor National Register Historic District would include the former Studebaker Administration Building, a former auto assembly building, a machine shop, truck production building, Union Station Technology Center and the Vandalia Depot building.

Famed industrial architect Albert Kahn designed two of the buildings.

Zeiger says it could take up to a year for a decision on whether the site will obtain landmark status.
