Key matchup: Notre Dame will need to hold on to the ball better than it did in its first meeting with Virginia, a 68-53 home loss Jan. 28, when the Irish committed 20 turnovers. Sherman turned the ball over five times, and Pat Connaughton and Demetrius Jackson had four turnovers each. Atkins, who had two turnovers in the loss, also struggled when Virginia brought 6-foot-6 Justin Anderson off the bench to guard the 6-2 senior.
The skinny: The Irish are playing their third straight road game in seven days. Notre Dame opened the stretch with a 73-69 win over Boston College on Sunday but lost to Miami 71-64 Wednesday. Jackson returned against the Hurricanes from a two-game ban to allow him to get caught up academically. The freshman guard had 17 points and five assists in 27 minutes. Virginia is the top defensive team in the ACC, holding teams to a conference-low 55.5 points per game and 38.6 percent shooting. The Cavaliers are tied with No. 1 Syracuse for first place in the ACC.
