Ind. finds health problems in Gary takeover school

– A state health inspector has discovered mold and other problems at a Gary school that state education officials took control of two years ago.

A State Department of Health inspector discovered mold, water-damaged ceiling tiles and other problems at the Roosevelt Career and College Academy. Indiana took over the troubled school two years ago and awarded control of it to charter operator EdisonLearning, Inc.

Gary Attorney and State Board of Education Member Tony Walker asked for the inspection, which was conducted Feb. 11. He tells The Times of Munster (http://bit.ly/1eebLXo) he’s uncomfortable with students attending class in a building which could be circulating mold spores through ventilation.

An EdisonLearning spokesman said heating problems have caused pipes to burst around the building. The Gary Community School Corporation owns the building.
