Convicted Trenton, NJ, mayor removed from office
George Muschal (muh-SHELL) was sworn in Wednesday afternoon in a private ceremony in Trenton's city hall.
The path for the city council president to become mayor was cleared earlier in the day when a judge removed Tony Mack from office. Mack was convicted Feb. 7 of corruption after a government sting.
Muschal is to serve until July 1. The 66-year-old retired police officer says he does not intend to seek a full term in office in the May election.
Muschal says he will ask the state government to pay to hire 50 new police officers in an effort to deal with rising crime rates.
