Komets fall to Greenville

The effort was better than in their previous game, but the Komets lost again – 3-2 to the Greenville Road Warriors at Memorial Coliseum on Friday night.

The Komets were 17-6-4 after losses coming into the night.

And they were coming off a dreadful 4-1 loss Wednesday at the Coliseum to the Kalamazoo Wings, on a night Fort Wayne could have pulled into a tie for first in the division.

They came out much harder Friday and netted the first goal 4:16 into the game when defenseman Joe Hartman’s shot from the top of the right circle ricocheted off a Greenville player and slipped past goaltender Jason Missiaen.

The Road Warriors tied it at 16:27 when a shot from the point by defenseman Andrew Himelson was redirected in front by right wing Scott Arnold and the puck bounced underneath goalie Andrey Makarov.

A pass out of the right corner by Greenville winger Lindsay Sparks set up forward Josh Nicholls in front to spin and slip a backhand shot underneath Makarov at 10:23 of the second period for a 2-1 lead.

The Komets evened the score at 19:10 when forward Kenton Miller sent a pass from the left corner to right wing Shawn Szydlowski, who smacked the puck into the bottom of the net as he fell to the ice.

The Road Warriors finished off a 3-on-1 rush with an Andrew Rowe rebound goal at 2:33 of the third period. The puck was going wide of the net before it caromed off the skate of Fort Wayne defenseman Simon Danis-Pepin for a 3-2 lead.

Notes: Komets forward Jason Dale, who re-injured his groin Wednesday, will miss at least four weeks. That was his first game back after missing 10 games with a groin injury. The Komets are hopeful he won’t require surgery. … Former Komets forward Jean-Michel Rizk didn’t play because of a concussion.
