Bigger Big Ten sets matchups for next season

Indiana and Purdue met just once this year in men’s basketball, the first time that had happened since the 2008-09 season.

Their rivalry returns to a home-and-home series next year, the schools found out Friday when the Big Ten released matchups for the 2014-15 season.

As Maryland and Rutgers join and expand the conference to 14 teams, the men will stick with an 18-game league schedule, while women’s basketball moves from 16 games to 18.

Women previously played an 18-game conference schedule from the 1982-83 through 1993-94 seasons, and again from 2007-08 through 2009-10.

Next season, the men play five opponents twice and face the eight other teams once.

In addition to Purdue, the Hoosiers have home-and-home series with Maryland, Rutgers, Ohio State and Michigan State.

The Boilermakers play Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio State and Rutgers twice.

There are some commonalities in the single-play schedules of IU and Purdue.

Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota and Penn State visit Assembly Hall, and the Hoosiers will travel to Illinois, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Northwestern.

The Boilermakers also get just one game apiece against what are currently the worst teams in the league: Northwestern and Penn State.

Purdue’s home schedule includes Iowa, Maryland, Michigan and Nebraska, while Michigan State, Northwestern, Penn State and Wisconsin are among its road opponents.

On the women’s side, Indiana and Purdue will meet twice for the fourth time in five seasons.

Other Hoosier home-and-home series are Maryland, Michigan State, Ohio State and Rutgers.

The Boilermakers have two games against Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio State and Rutgers.

The Big Ten did not announce dates, times and television schedules.
