Mad Ants hit boards hard, beat Erie

In their first game since center Brian Butch left to play in the Philippines, the Mad Ants showed they can still grab rebounds just fine in Friday night’s 112-102 victory at Erie, Pa.

The Mad Ants outrebounded the BayHawks 48-36 and got their 16th victory in their last 23 games.

Tony Mitchell had 19 points for the Mad Ants, and Trey McKinney-Jones had 19 points and a career-best 11 rebounds.

Jamaal Franklin, in his first game since being sent down by the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, had 18 points, six rebounds and six assists.

All-Star Ron Howard had 16 points and five assists.

Matt Bouldin had 15 points and Sadiel Rojas had nine points with 13 rebounds for the Mad Ants (22-14), who play host to Iowa tonight at Memorial Coliseum.

The BayHawks (11-25) squandered an eight-point lead in front of 3,438 fans at Erie Insurance Arena.

Ricky Davis scored 25 points for Erie, and Justin Brownlee had 18. The BayHawks’ Lewis Jackson had 14 assists.

A layup by Micah Downs put the BayHawks up 70-64 with 6:02 remaining in the third quarter, but the Mad Ants went on a 25-10 run to take control, culminating with a McKinney-Jones jump shot for a 89-80 lead with 8:56 remaining in the game.

Fort Wayne is 3-1 this season against Erie, which has lost its last three games.
